The TransRarau is located in the north-east of the country and, as the name says, passes over the Rarau mountains, connecting Bistrita valley (Chiril) and Moldova valley ( Pojorata). The road is extremely spectacular, comparable to the Transfagarasan and Transalpina in terms of winding roads and stunning views. The road reaches to a hight of 1400m.Currently the road has a special regimme status, speed limited to 30 km / h, with priority for the vehicles going up, buses and trucks being prohibided.The road has been asphalted in 2014, so it’s in optimal conditions.
To get to the road you can either come from DN17B, Roseni-Vatra Dornei and ride on DJ175A from Chiril, or from DN17 Campuluing Moldovenesc-Vatra Dornei, riding on 175B from Pojorata.
As you ride the aprox 30km of the road you can make a stop at Cabana Rarau and grab something to eat as you admire the beutiful view of “Pietrele Doamnei”. You can also walk closer to see them better, it takes aprox 10min. You can make a stop at Rarau monastery, built in 1538 by Petru Rares.
How to get there : come from DN17B, Roseni-Vatra Dornei and ride on DJ175A from Chiril, or from DN17 Campuluing Moldovenesc-Vatra Dornei, riding on 175B from Pojorata.
Road conditions : the road conditions are optimal, the tarmac layer being rebuilt recently.
